Read – Deuteronomy 29 & 30
Chapters 29 and 30 provide us a good summary of the wilderness journey – a journey that came as a result of disobedience but has nonetheless known the blessing and provision of God. The clothes on the backs of the people and the shoes on their feet have not worn out. Once again it is important to notice that the whole story is told in such a fashion that the current Israelites are written into the story even though most of them probably were not present during the time when God did battle with Pharaoh in Egypt. The story is not just the story of people who have lived before them but it is about them – and it important for us as we read this story to know that it is our story too.
The point of the retelling of the story is to renew the covenant that God made with his people when he brought them out of Egypt. Now the covenant is renewed and the people are called to choose life and not death. Living within the covenant relationship is the only source of life for these people as it is for us too.
