Reader’s Guide: “The Word for Today”

Read John 9:35-41
As we left the man born blind who had been driven out we were left with the question of what might become of him. As it turns out he is not abandoned! Jesus comes and finds him. Once again the story mirrors the earlier story of Jesus finding the man who was healed at the Pool of Bethzatha. In both cases Jesus reveals himself to the man. In the first case the man goes to the Pharisees to report on Jesus. In this case, the man takes the final step to full belief in Jesus. He makes a powerful confession. When Jesus asks him if he believes in the Son of Man, the man asks who that might be. When Jesus tells him that he is the Son of Man, the blind man’s confession is of the highest degree – he calls Jesus “LORD” which is the way in which Jews at that time had come to refer to God. The blind man worships Jesus! God alone is worthy of worship.
In a very brief way Jesus provides a word of theological interpretation at this point. The meaning of this whole event has been to reveal that those who think they see do not see and those who are blind are given sight by Jesus. The story ends with the religious leaders, the Pharisees, totally blind. From a spiritual point of view they have switched places with the man born blind.
