Read Psalm 69
Psalm 69 is less familiar to most of us. Yet, as we read it we can see how this psalm would have also been helpful for the earliest followers of Jesus. It speaks of an innocent one who is on the verge of being swallowed up by those who attack him. And, if we listen closer, we hear of the offer of sour wine at the foot of the cross and the offer of vinegar to drink in this psalm – verse 21.
The other gospel writers, particularly Luke, made even more use of this psalm. The point is for us to recognize how the earliest followers read psalms like this one through the lens of the death and resurrection of Jesus and then let the psalm color their telling of the story.
