Reader’s Guide: “The Word for Today” Saturday, March 9, 2013 Read – Deuteronomy 15:1-10 Once again this passage for Deuteronomy instructs the people of God to care for the poor among them. The “Sabbath Year” was to be a time of redistribution and a restoring of those who had not prospered. In Luke’s gospel Jesus began his ministry on this note (Luke 4:16-19). It is likely that no year of jubilee was ever observed. Likely that will never happen in our world either. One can’t help but wonder what would have happened if the OT people had taken God seriously. One can’t help but wonder what would happen in our world if we did. At any rate, the care of the poor – a great theme for Luke and the center of this chapter – is an important word for us to hear. We may not be as comfortable with Luke as we would like to be. Those who prosper may find Luke to be just too “over the top” in this concern. Yet, we will soon hear Jesus’ voice in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. We await that parable tomorrow.
